About White Mountains National Park

White Mountains National Park is located in northern New Hampshire and encompasses a large portion of the White Mountain range, including some of the tallest peaks in the northeastern United States. The park is characterized by steep granite cliffs, alpine tundra, dense hardwood and conifer forests, and clear mountain streams. It supports diverse wildlife such as moose, black bears, and peregrine falcons. Historically, the area was significant for Native American tribes and later for logging and early tourism developments. Today, the park offers a wide range of recreational opportunities including hiking, rock climbing, skiing, fishing, and scenic driving along the Kancamagus Highway. The Appalachian Trail passes through the park, offering long-distance backpacking options as well as day hikes. Notable landmarks include Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast, known for unpredictable weather and views from the summit, and Franconia Notch, a scenic mountain pass featuring the Flume Gorge. Visitors appreciate both the challenging terrain and accessible family-friendly areas with visitor centers and well-maintained trail networks. The park is a popular destination year-round, drawing hikers in summer and leaf-peepers in autumn, while offering snow sports during winter.
